News & Projects

The SADC Programme for Rhino Conservation started in September 1999. The initial phase focused on assessment studies to identify needs for assistance in range states. At the same time the Programme spent considerable effort in supporting the definition of national coordinating structures, wherever these were missing or weak. Regional workshops have been held regularly once a year to ensure the active participation of national agencies in planning and implementation and to establish a regional coordinating mechanism.

Based on these initial steps and requirements expressed by range states and participating organisations, the Programme has gradually developed an articulate workplan of activities.

We present in these pages brief overviews of some of the activities implemented to date.
